Today in Orioles History: Matt Wieters Walks It Off in Grand Fashion

The View from Sarasota, Part 5Matt Wieters’ walk-off grand slam gave the Orioles a 10-6 victory versus the Tampa Bay Rays on this day in Baltimore Orioles history, April 18, 2013. Nick Markakis, Manny Machado, and Adam Jones all singled in the top of the 10th inning to set up Wieters’ heroics.

Steve Pearce’s two-run homer off of David Price in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the O’s a 6-5 lead. However, Darren O’Day allowed a solo shot to James Loney in the top of the eighth inning to knot up the game. It would one of a career-high seven home runs surrendered by O’Day in 2013 (He also allowed seven home runs in 2011).

To date, Wieters has four career walk-off home runs and two career grand slams. His other grand slam came on April 16, 2012.
