Seven-Game Win Streaks Are Fun. Just Ask the 1966 Orioles.

Throughout the 2016 season Roar from 34 will use Flashback Fridays to remember the 1966 Baltimore Orioles and to honor the 50th anniversary of the franchise’s first World Series title.

1966 Baltimore SunYour Baltimore Orioles opened the 2016 season with a seven-game win streak. It was the best start in team history as well as the first time the O’s have won seven consecutive games since 2005.

Is the seven-game win streak an indicator of bigger things to come? Well, if the 1966 Orioles are any indication, we’ll need a few more win streaks along the way.

The 1966 Orioles won at least seven consecutive games on three different occasions.

  • They had a 10-game run from April 16 through May 1.
  • They had a seven-game streak from June 29 through July 3.
  • And they enjoyed a final seven-game run from July 17 through July 23.

The team’s longest losing streak, meanwhile, was four games.

Given the Orioles’ underdog status headed into the World Series and their subsequent, surprising sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the phrase that came to be associated with their championship was “Would You Believe Four Straight?” The words appeared on a banner outside of Memorial Stadium, and they informed the Baltimore Sun’s victorious headline.

Considering the regular season the team had, you might think that four straight wins wasn’t so surprising after all.
