Matt Wieters Walk-Off Provides Orioles Nightcap on Opening Day

DSC_0038Two rain delays produced a lengthy Opening Day, but a Matt Wieters walk-off, RBI single provided a cold beer nightcap for the Orioles in their 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Wieters had one walk-off hit in 2015, a solo home run versus the Atlanta Braves on July 27.

Last season’s first walk-off win came on April 25, 2015, when David Lough hit a 10th-inning homer versus the Red Sox. The Orioles had nine walk-off wins altogether in 2015. Seven came on home runs; two came on singles.

Other Opening Day highlights:

  • Mark Trumbo totaled four hits; instant fan favorite Joey Rickard added two of his own; Adam Jones had a two-run double; and the O’s combined for five walks – two for Chris Davis, and one each for Pedro Alvarez, J.J. Hardy, and Jonathan Schoop.
  • Six pitchers saw action. Chris Tillman looked very strong in two innings of work, with five strikeouts prior to the second rain delay. Tyler Wilson provided three scoreless innings, and the O’s eight-nine combo of Darren O’Day and Zach Britton closed things out on the back end. Mychal Givens allowed Minnesota’s only scoring, giving up two runs in 1.1 innings.
