The Time Buck Showalter’s Birthday Didn’t Go So Well

Happy Birthday Buck Showalter.

The Orioles head to Minute Maid Park for tonight’s road match-up with Houston, and it’s bound to go better than Buck’s first birthday as a big league manager.

The New York Yankees lost twice on May 23, 1992. No, it wasn’t a doubleheader. The Yankees played into the wee hours of the morning in the city that never sleeps in a game that started on May 22,  eventually losing in 14 innings to the Milwaukee Brewers. They returned to the ballpark that evening and lost again to the Brewers, this time in 10 innings. One birthday, two losses.

The Yankees lose! Good news for Orioles fans, bad news for their future manager. As always, Buck had an answer in the end.

The skipper blamed the losses on the Yankees’ clubhouse manager,  who shared his birthday. Meanwhile, Showalter expressed optimism moving forward.

“It’s a good sign,” said Showalter. “Tomorrow’s not my birthday.”
