Today in Orioles History: Ain’t the Beer Cold!

The Orioles ended a five-game losing streak on Sunday with an extra-innings win versus Toronto, regained first place in the American League East, and finally gave fans another chance to proclaim “Ain’t the Beer Cold!”

Monday is an off day for the Birds, but there’s still reason to repeat the iconic O’s phrase about frosty beverages. On this day in Orioles history, Aug. 1, 1993, broadcaster Chuck Thompson was inducted into the broadcaster’s wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. You can read more about 1993 Ford C. Frick Award Winner Chuck Thompson on the National Baseball Hall of Fame website.

Video of Thompson’s speech is provided below. My favorite part is his message to fans at the end.

“If sometime in the future you return to this wonderful town of Cooperstown and you go to the baseball Hall of Fame and you happen to go into the broadcast wing and a member of your group looks up at Chuck Thompson’s name on that plaque and asks ‘Did you know him?’ I hope that you’ll say, ‘Yes, I did. He was a friend.'”

Watch the full speech.
